General

What is Rim Saver?

Rim Saver is a lightweight tire insert designed to protect your mountain bike rims (both carbon and aluminum) from dings, cracks, and your tire from pinch flats. Think of it as a bottom-out bumper for your rim. It helps distribute impacts that could otherwise cause rim damage, offering peace of mind for your rides.

Can I use this on my current mountain bike?

Use this text to answer questions in as much detail as possible for your customers.

Who is Rim Saver for?

Rim Saver is ideal for intermediate to advanced mountain bikers who ride trail, enduro, or E-bikes. If you occasionally ding your rim or crack a carbon rim and want to avoid future damage, Rim Saver is for you. It’s not designed for riders who frequently destroy wheels in extreme conditions. Stay tuned for a Heavyweight version coming in Spring 2025, designed for those who break a lot of wheels.

Product Features

How is Rim Saver different from foam tire inserts?

Unlike foam tire inserts, Rim Saver uses a durable plastic material that absorbs energy with a thinner profile. It doesn’t absorb sealant, so it won’t get heavier over time like foam inserts, which can act like a sponge. Rim Saver is more like a bottom-out bumper for your rim! Foam inserts can be cut through during sharp rock impacts, but Rim Saver stays intact and in place, offering consistent protection for your rims.

How does that small plastic protector protect my rims from big impacts?

Sharp Impact Protection

Rim Saver is made from a tough polymer that absorbs impacts and shields your rim. Sharp impacts carry a lot of energy and are notorious for causing rim cracks and pinch flats. Our engineered polymer material takes the "sharp" out of the impact, diffusing the energy and protecting your rim. It may be small, but it manages impact energy effectively—think of it like a stiff spring that does more with less space.

What sizes are available?

Rim Saver comes in two sizes:

27.5"

29"

What are the weights?
  • 169g for 27.5” (excluding the valve)
  • 179g for 29” (excluding the valve)
  • The provided 44mm valves weigh 7g each.
What tire and rim sizes does Rim Saver fit?

For tire widths between 2.3" and 2.6". Rim internal widths between 27mm and 33mm

Does Rim Saver work with a tube?

No, Rim Saver is designed to work only with tubeless tire systems.

Installation & Use

Is Rim Saver easy to install?

Yes! The patent-pending tensioning device allows Rim Saver to expand in diameter during tire installation, keeping it out of the way of the tire's beads. Once the tire is installed, Rim Saver cinches itself into place, ensuring it’s always in the right position during impacts and doesn’t shift or knock around while riding.

Can I use my own valves, or do I have to use Rim Saver valves?

While Rim Saver comes with specially designed 44mm Presta valves, you can use other valves, like Reserve Fillmore valves, if you prefer. However, for the best performance, we recommend using Rim Saver valves. Valves with a removable rubber sealing cone tend to be compatible, but there are no guarantees. If you're considering a specific valve, feel free to reach out to us for compatibility advice.

Does Rim Saver affect tire pressure?

No, Rim Saver doesn’t significantly alter tire pressure. You can maintain your usual settings, though some riders find they can run slightly lower pressures for better traction without worrying about pinch flats or rim damage. Lower pressures can improve grip and reduce fatigue during long rides.

Performance & Maintenance

Will Rim Saver completely prevent rim damage?

Rim Saver significantly reduces the risk of rim damage, but it won’t protect against every impact. Just like a phone case, Rim Saver can absorb most hits, but in extreme cases, your rim could still break if the impact is severe enough. It’s a balance between protection and keeping weight down.

Does Rim Saver change how the bike feels?

Rim Saver is designed to be lightweight and unobtrusive. Most riders don’t notice a change in the feel of their ride, except for the increased confidence that comes from knowing their rims are better protected. We let you choose the ride feel based on tire choice, and we don’t want to get in the way of that.

How long does Rim Saver last?

Rim Saver is built to withstand abuse, but its lifespan will depend on your riding conditions and how often you experience impacts. Most riders can expect Rim Saver to last two seasons before needing a replacement.

If Rim Saver gets damaged by a rock strike, do I need to replace it?

Not yet! If Rim Saver deforms and takes on visible damage, it means it took a big impact and is doing its job perfectly. Remember that you still have 359 more degrees of protection around your rim, and the odds of hitting the same spot again are low. We recommend replacing Rim Saver after two seasons of normal use, or one season if you're hard on your gear.

Is Rim Saver recyclable?

Yes! When Rim Saver has reached the end of its life, simply cut off the bungee cord and recycle the plastic insert in your local recycling bin. It's made from commonly recycled materials. Rim Saver helps extend the life of your wheels and tires, making it an eco-friendly option.
